There is a lot of preparation and commitment involved in puppy rearing; it's a serious undertaking that with careful planning before the puppies arrive will increase the puppy's chances of survival. Hypothermia is a leading cause of puppy mortality.

With the aid of microscopes and telescopes, we can see things that no other animals can see. With sound amplification equipment, we can hear things that no other animals can hear. But we cannot even begin to approach the olfactory sensitivity of dogs. Dogs live in a world of smells that does not exist for humans, and while most trainers use verbal commands and hand signals to train dogs, the dog's strongest sense is rarely used in training.

One of the things about field trials that escape the minds of many folks is that the vast majority of the credit from a win rests squarely on the withers of the dog and not the shoulders of the owner. A wise man owns a good dog and feels blessed for the experience, and a fool owns a great one and thinks, "verybody will know me now!" I do not mean to imply that there is no training that goes into the formation of a hunting dog. Indeed there is plenty of training. There is also lots of conditioning. This is especially true for beagles. Many times a beagle trial ends in the afternoon heat and the best conditioned dog will rise to the top.

This Saturday, October 17th, is the opening day of the Ruffed Grouse season in Pennsylvania, and for many Pennsylvania hunters the Ruffed Grouse season is the beginning of the most enjoyable and exciting wild game hunt. With the cooler temperatures, shorter days, and the brilliant show of fall foliage, there is no question that the season has arrived; however in our local area there has yet to be a frost, so hunters will enter the woods this Saturday with plenty of colorful foliage and vegetation to contend with. But that's fine for most hunters because colorful leaves and vegetation are all part of the upland hunting experience; it's a time when many hunters plan to keep the dogs working close.

At the recent Bird Dog Days event Ed Rader gave some valuable tips on basic gundog training your pup. Ed talked about how dogs are pack animals, and pack animals will respect and obey the leader of the pack. He gave plenty of tips on training with close, hands-on methods using association and repetition. While his training tips are very useful for gun dog training, many of these methods work just fine when training the family dog. Ed says that establishing you as the pack leader are the very basics of where good training begins. If your dog doesn't respect you as the leader he will not perform for you.

Versatile hunting breeds are all the rage today and I have to tell you that I am more than just a little disappointed that the beagle is not recognized as one of them. No doubt, it has to do with the fact that many of the versatile uses of the beagle come in an accidental fashion. For instance, a beagle goes into the thickets looking for a rabbit and a squirrel runs up a tree. Next thing you know, the squirrel is in the game vest. Beagles are good at flushing birds too?doves, woodcock, grouse, and pheasant have all become part of my beagles? repertoire. In fact, some of my hounds have circled stocked pheasant while tonguing on the scent trail. I got my limit (two) of stocked pheasant last year and never fired a shot?Duke ran them down in the brush and retrieved what I discovered to be previously wounded birds. Why do I mention the mixed bag approach to hunting with our canine companions? Thanksgiving is the reason, and if you start now you can prepare an alternative Thanksgiving like I do. Start freezing meat, by species, and you will be a big hit at Thanksgiving.

This is our third blog post on Dr. Bob Rider's Sporting Dog First Aid session that was presented at the Lion Country Supply Bird Dog Days Customer Appreciation Event. The topic of this blog post is the treatment and prevention of Lyme disease and heart-worms, two very common threats to our canines. Lyme disease is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases throughout the United States and Europe. A deer tick capable of transmitting Lyme disease must feed for 36 hours for the actual transmission to occur. If the tick has not actually attached and fed on the host, then the disease transmission has not occurred.
