My good friend Jason Mowery introduced me to fox hunting at night with electronic game calls when I was a teenager. We used Johnny Stewart electronics with cassette tapes and after a few times out we called in and bagged my first gray fox in the mountains of northern Clearfield County, Pennsylvania with Jason as the caller. Jason's dad was a fox hunter and taught Jason well. At that time in the 1990's Johnny Stewart electronics worked, but were limited. In relative terms the sounds weren't clear and we had to fast forward or rewind to get particular sounds. We didn't know what we were doing but we knew we liked this night sport.

When I take the beagles afield in hunting season, I look for hound safety first, followed by a good run, and lastly some rabbits in the game vest. We are in August right now, and there is no way to shoot rabbits since it is not hunting season. Safety is still the main concern, and getting a good run can be difficult. It seems that I am more likely to encounter a juvenile rabbit. Those half-grown bunnies require a dog to have a lot nose and patience to keep the chase going. Then, there are the "fisters." A fister is what I call a baby rabbit that is no longer than your fist is wide. Not only do they leave very little scent, but they can also crawl into places that are impossible for a beagle to get at them. This is a good thing, since that is also what keeps those same fisters from being appetizers to the predators that have no closed hunting season.

I live in a house that is old enough that some of the original electrical outlets require a three-prong adapter, since the originals were installed before it became standard practice to include the ground prong on outlets. Some rooms only have a couple outlets as well. "Why do you have to hog all the outlets!"

Do you use a dog bell? These days, GPS tracking collars have become somewhat popular for good reason, as they are valuable for finding dogs that have run out of sight of the hunter or trainer. But some hunters are "low tech" or want to have a backup for if a GPS unit would fail.

I had a very memorable hunt with my 14 year old son, Hunter recently. Pheasants Forever conducts a youth hunt annually to keep the sport alive and in front of our youth. Tim Rowan the Youth coordinator for this specific hunt takes great pride in his chapter North Central PA Chapter 630. Everyone was very welcoming and hospitable. When we arrived there was a booth with free food and beverages, a beautiful pheasant trailer where a volunteer taught your children how to properly clean their harvest, and each hunt was kicked off with a briefing by Tim around safety and respect for the dogs and their owners.

Halloween, quite honestly, is not what it was when I was a kid. Back then, you wore a homemade costume, or if your parents had some extra money to throw around, a store bough one, made from what appeared to be the same cheap material that they utilize when making disposable table cloths. The plastic table cloth was tailored to mostly fit a kid, and had prints and patterns to look like a superhero or cartoon character or something.
