This story was written by my great grandfather Robert Hamilton 14 years before. I never had the pleasure to meet the man but heard lots of stories about him and no doubt he contributed to my love of hunting and the outdoors. I had to change the dog's name as it isn't politically correct any longer but other than that this is his story as it appeared in the October 1964 Pennsylvania Game News. ~Aaron

My mother did not have a job. Instead, she worked all day at home for free. I had a lot of chores as a kid, but they were all outside'splitting and stacking firewood, starting the fire in the furnace, keeping it going, dumping ashes, cutting the grass, tending the garden and all of those things. In terms of everything else, I was completely spoiled. Heck, I even brought laundry home from college to be cleaned. When I was out of clean clothes, it was time to visit the old homestead!

If ticks were not scary enough already, there is a new tick-borne virus on the rise this year. The Powassan virus, which is rarer than the bacterium that produces Lyme but is far more deadly, is now being spread by the deer tick. The Powassan virus causes inflammation of the brain, which leads to death or permanent disability in 60 percent of cases. So far, the CDC has reported 75 confirmed cases, but this number is predicted to rise as we enter into summer and fall when ticks are more active.

I'm sure any of you who have owned animals throughout your lifetime have witnessed the toll time can take on our four legged friends. The joys of owning a dog can certainly outweigh the heartache you experience once things like arthritis and hip dysplasia set in. All we want to do as a responsible pet owner is fix everything and make it all better for those who we consider members of our family.

Suffice it to say that my wife read that oregano has mild antibiotic-like qualities. The key word is mild. She ended up with antibiotics from the doctor a few weeks later. There is a whole industry around supplements that make you healthy, reverse aging, and augment virility. Most, no doubt, are hokum. There are some, however, that do work. Dasuquin is a joint supplement that I purchase. I sometimes use a similar product, Annamaet Endure. Both relieve arthritis in old dogs, and they are basically Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Methylsulfonylmethane and chondroitin Sulfate. It really helps my older dogs move better, and Rob Downey, who led a nutritional seminar at Lion Country Supply (and is the founder of Annamaet) explained that studies have shown that if utilized for the entire adult life of a dog, chondroitin can add two additional productive years to a working dog's career. That is a lot of rabbits for me or a lot of birds for others.

Step into our warehouse and you'll find the vast selections and quantities of the products we have online and in our catalog. It takes some time to get acclimated to where everything is, but after working here for over a year, I can get you from location A-1 to Z-24 and finding everything in between almost. It's not always easy as there is always something new coming into the warehouse.

As I keyed the microphone on the earpiece to my radio to tell my son that the two 11 month old pups were barking on the coyote I was reminded that it was the first ever coyote track they ever smelled. Being their first time as with all dogs I have trained over the last 50 years, they did have some losses.

On a Friday, I started casually looking at shelter dogs on PetFinder.com. That Monday, I brought Evander home from the Indiana County Humane Society. He's a White German Shepherd/Lab mix and about a year old.

If you have an outside kennel for your dog, and live in northern climes with outside temperatures that go below freezing, then you must have a Lion Country Supply Nelson Water Bucket Heater. Our family used to rotate three LCS Flat Sided Kennel Pails to our Lab's kennel during the winter. One with fresh water in the morning, a second with fresh water in the afternoon, and another trip out in the dark before bedtime with a third bucket of fresh water. The frozen buckets were brought inside until they thawed enough to release their icy blocks. Additional trips outside to dump out the ice blocks, and by winter's end we had amassed a small iceberg in our yard.

If you walk into our Lion Country Supply retail store in central Pennsylvania you should receive a greeting, followed-up by, -Is there anything we can help you with." Regardless of what you are looking for, you can expect an additional question of, -What kind of dog do you have?" It helps in product guidance and just makes for good general conversation.

These photos are from a January 20th pheasant hunt sponsored by Lion Country Supply. Shown in the photographs are my two hunting partners, Tucker (black lab) and Lucy (Springer) and myself. It was wet, foggy, and 50 degrees. Highly unusual for Pennsylvania in January but made for great scenting and the dogs performed admirably.
