Garmin T5 Mini and TT15 Mini Compatibility Change

We have just received word from Garmin that all newly manufactured Garmin TT15 Mini receivers and Garmin T5 Mini receivers will no longer be compatible with the Garmin Astro 320 handhelds. This is a result of a change in the hardware inside the TT15 Mini and T5 Mini collars due to component shortages.

Previously, the TT15 and T5 series of collars could be paired to an Astro 320 handheld or one of the Astro 430, Alpha 100, Alpha 200/200i, Alpha 10, or PRO 550 Plus handhelds. However, if it was paired to one of the newer handhelds, it could not be paired with the Astro 320 handheld. As such, if it was paired with an Astro 320 handheld, it could not also be paired with one of the newer handhelds. This was because the Garmin Astro 320 handhelds were on a 151 MHz frequency and the Alpha 100 and newer ran on a 155 MHz frequency. The earlier TT15, T5, TT15 Mini, and T5 Mini collars were able to communicate on both the 151 MHz and 155 MHz channels, but not both at the same time.

    Why the change in compatibility?

We suspect that Garmin had issues sourcing the component that communicated on the 151 MHz frequency and made the decision to only include the 155 MHz components. As with the X-Series TT15 and T5 collars, part sourcing remains a consistent constraint for Garmin. Availability of the 151 MHz chips forced their hand in February to make the change to the X-Series collars and now so again for the Mini versions of the collars.

What about the Garmin TT15X and T5X collars?

At launch back in February 2022, the TT15X and T5X were also not compatible with the Garmin Astro 320 handhelds. During pairing the Astro 320 handheld appears to pair with the collars but will not track and communicate with the collar past the initial pairing. So, now with the Mini versions also not working with the Garmin Astro 320 handheld, there are no existing collars being manufactured that will work with the older handheld.

How can I tell if I have a compatible TT15 Mini or T5 Mini?

As far as we know, there are no visual markers with the newly produced TT15 Mini or T5 Mini collars. If you are running an Astro 320 handheld, we recommend that you do not purchase a new TT15 Mini or T5 Mini collar due to the risk of them not being compatible. We are also not sure at this time what is going to happen collars sent in for refurbishment, if you send in an older Mini collar that worked with the Astro 320 handhelds, we cannot guarantee that the replacement Mini collar will be compatible with your Astro 320 handheld.

@John, For AKC field trials you can use the Astro 430 handheld with a T5 Mini or T5 full size. For fields trials they don’t want the handler to have the ability to use any training functions, purely tracking only. Likely because a few people tried running TT10 or TT15 collars in a trial, they had to play it safe and ban both the Alpha 100 and Alpha 200 handhelds for everyone.

The biggest issue for me is that the Alpha 100 and Alpha 200 are not accepted by the AKC for field trial use even if just paired with the tracking collar.

Would be nice if Garmin would reach out to them.
