Hunting Dog Supplies: A Legacy for the Field

July 29, 2025 5 min read

Lion Country Supply started back in 1974 by John (Buck) Koritko, right here in the rugged hills of Central Pennsylvania. The land was wild, the grouse were plentiful, and bird dog lovers needed a place to get quality gear they could trust. What started as a humble supply outlet grew fast because of one simple principle: we take care of fellow hunters like family.

LCS has been in Port Matilda, PA ever since. Surrounded by thousands of acres of hunt-able land, it’s the perfect testing ground for the gear we sell. Every product that hits our shelves gets run through its paces by real dogs in real conditions like rain, snow, thickets, and deep draws. And trust me, if it can survive a couple days with my crew of dogs, it can survive anything.

I didn’t take over Lion Country Supply to get rich. I did it because I love the dogs, I love the hunt, and I love helping others make the most of both. Every time I see a customer post a photo of their dog with a tail high and a bird in their mouth, wearing one of our collars or tracking systems it feels like a small win for the entire community.

My Dogs, My Field, My Gear

Let me tell you about my crew.

I run a couple German Shorthaired Pointers (Ruger and Elli) smart, drivey, and just a touch hard-headed.  Then there is Willow (Princess) she is a smart English Setter that rips through the thickets like no other.  But unlike the GSP’s she is soft and gentle and doesn’t like to be corrected. They all live to find birds. But all that fire needs structure, and that’s where the right gear makes all the difference.

Every season, I rely on gear from our own hunting dog supplies collection:👉 Hunting Dog Supplies at Lion Country Supply

First and foremost, I never head out without a quality GPS tracking collar. I’m currently running the Garmin Alpha 300i with the TT25 collars, and I can’t recommend them enough. Whether I’m chasing grouse in the mountains of PA, doodles in the wetlands or running a spring training session, being able to track my dogs in real time gives me peace of mind and precision I couldn’t hunt without.

In my vest you’ll always find LCS water bottles, zip lock bag of our multi-chews, styptic powder and lots of 28 gauge shells. Every one of my dogs wears one of our LCS dog vests when conditions call for it. I get it, some dogs hate 'em at first but once they realize it keeps them hunting longer, they learn to tolerate them real quick.

Passion That Goes Beyond Products

You see, hunting dog supplies aren’t just transactional. They’re tools that support a way of life. When we get a call from a new bird dog owner who doesn’t know what kind of check cord to buy or how to fit an e-collar properly, we don’t just sell them something. We talk them through it, hunter to hunter.

Visit our Facebook and Instagram pages, where the real heart of the community shows up. Whether it’s seeing a new customer post their pup’s first point or a veteran dog handler showing off a championship brace we love it all. If you ever want to see what Lion Country Supply is really about, spend 10 minutes scrolling through our Facebook or Instagram. You'll see what I mean.

Built by Hunters, For Hunters

We’ve kept our business tight and personal for a reason. At a time when everyone seems to be outsourcing, automating, and cutting corners we’re doing the opposite. We pack every order by hand. We answer the phone ourselves. And if you’ve got a real problem or need some advice, you might even end up talking to me.

Because here's the deal: You can't fake passion. And you can’t fake 50 years of trust.

When I walk into the warehouse and see our team assembling remote bird launchers or prepping orders of bumpers and collars for customers across the country, I see more than gear. I see the continuation of a tradition. I see mornings in the field. I see fathers teaching sons how to work a dog. I see dogs with wagging tails and proud eyes, knowing they did the job they were bred for.

Essentials I Trust Every Season

Now, since you’re here looking for hunting dog supplies, let me break down a few pieces of gear I think every serious bird dog owner should own:

1. Garmin Tracking System
As I mentioned earlier, I won’t hunt without it. The new Alpha 300i is easier to use than ever and has better range and battery life than past models. We stock them right here: Garmin Alpha Series

2. Bird Launchers
Perfect for training pointing dogs, especially if you’re working on steadiness to flush or simulating wild bird conditions.

3. Garmin Pro 550
My go to for e-collar training. When you're training and need something simple, this is a killer option. We’ve sold hundreds and use it ourselves.

4. Training Dummies & Scents
Especially in the off-season, keeping your dog sharp with bumpers and realistic scents is key. We carry Dokken DeadFowl trainers and a full line of scents to simulate duck, pheasant, and grouse.

5. Protective Gear
From dog vests to dog boots, don’t wait until your dog is hurt to realize you needed them. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way.

And don't underestimate the value of hydration gear, especially in early season. Our collapsible bowls and water bottles are lightweight and field-tested.

It’s Not Just the Dogs That Get Hooked

One of the best parts of running Lion Country Supply is seeing how bird dog life gets passed down through generations. I’ve had customers tell me their dad bought from us in the 80s, and now they’re outfitting their own kids' first dogs with gear from the same shop.

And it’s not just about business, it’s personal.

There was a young man out of North Carolina last fall it was his first pointer, first real season, and he was overwhelmed with what he needed. He reached out through our website chat and ended up on a phone call with me. We walked through the basics: collar, check cord, vest, first aid. A couple weeks later, he emailed me a photo of his dog locked up on a bird. You’d have thought he won a national title. And honestly... I felt like I had too.

Come Run With Us

If you’re in the neighborhood, swing by the shop in Port Matilda. We’ve got gear, sure, but we’ve also got stories, good coffee, and a crew that’ll talk bird dogs until your ears fall off.

Or if you’re running dogs somewhere across the country, check out our full line of Hunting Dog Supplies. We’re always happy to help you get the right gear and the right fit. And if you’ve got questions, give us a call. You won’t get an AI bot. You’ll get one of us. A hunter. A dog person. Someone who gets it.

Final Words

At the end of the day, we don’t just sell gear. We sell confidence, safety, performance, and connection. We sell the ability to hunt harder, train smarter, and keep your best friend safe and effective in the field.

Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been hunting birds longer than I’ve been alive, welcome to the family. We’re proud to be part of your journey.

Until then, keep your dogs sharp and your boots muddy.
