Can the Garmin Alpha 100 double as a GPS unit for other than hunting?
Yes, the Alpha 100 handheld can be used as a GPS unit when not training or hunting your dogs. With the Alpha 100, you are able to navigate routes, track log of 10,000 points, and save up to 4,000 waypoints on the device. You also have the map and compass functions to navigate to your destinations.
My brand new Alpha 100 handheld is ready as 0% charged after a few hours of charging, is something wrong with the handheld?
Due to new regulations and laws that require batteries to have less than 30% charge on them in order to ship on a plane or air cargo, these deeply discharged batteries will take 6-12 hours of charging in an Alpha before they will begin to show charging. In some cases, the Alpha may only shows 90% charge for the first couple of charges, even though the battery is completely charged. Sometimes on the first charge, the Alpha handheld might read 0% charged for up to 8 hours of charging.
What all collars are compatible with the Alpha 100 handheld?
The Alpha 100 can work with the TT15, TT10, and T5 collars (tracking only) right out of the box. The Garmin DC50 (tracking only) can also be used with the Alpha 100 after it is updated to the current software version.
Can I change the color of the TT15 Mini collar strap?
Yes, you can choose from any color of our 3/4 Ecollar Replacement Straps (#CSTRAP3).
Can I use a Garmin TT15 Mini collar on one dog and a Garmin T5 Mini collar on another dog while using the Alpha 100 handheld?
Yes, you can use any combination of TT15, TT15 Mini, TT10, T5, and T5 Mini collars with the Alpha 100. When using a T5 and T5 Mini you will only have the tracking ability.
I see it can track 4 miles line of sight, but how far out will the correction function work?
Yes, the system can reach out to 4 miles in perfect conditions, line of sight. You can use the correction function at that range too as long as its line of sight. A good rule of thumb is if you can track the dog you can use the correction function.

First Trek in the Grouse Woods
I first wanted to train this new puppy without an e-collar, but after a discussion with the LCS guys common sense took over and I decided that a GPS/trainer would be a good idea. Took the 7-month old into the PA grouse woods this week and the collar worked fantastic. I started with a few brief lessons and collar conditioning as reinforcement of learned commands and off we went. Made it super easy to track and recall. Would recommend it to anyone.

The alpha is a game changer.
The garmin alpha mini is definitely a game changer coming from the classic 70 which was my previous system. It does take some getting use to the system but it is worth every penny.

I really like my Garmin. I can keep track of my dogs and if one gets in trouble I can go right to it. Thank you for a great product!

Really a wonderful addition to my Grouse Hunting Kit
I am a 75 y.o. that wears hearing aids and hunts grouse 40-50 days a year. Over the past 35 years I tried every possible combination of devices on my field bred setters. The best I have found is the Alpha 100 TT15 and a Northwoods Long Range Bell. With my hearing aids I can hear the bell 80-90% of the time and with the Alpha and TT15 I can always find the dogs in the heaviest of cover.

Alpha dog tracker
I have a 15 month old GSP. She about 26 tall, 50lbs, brown & tick in color. One great bird dog. When she hunt in fields I lose her a lot. I tried a Bell no good. I stopped at the store and John set up the Alpha for me next day we when out Pheasant training. the Alpha tells when she on point and also when she is running down the bird. It is so unbelievable how great this works. Worth every cent I paid

excellent gps collar
I use this collar on my 26 lb french brittany for hunting grouse in northern Michigan. She usually wears a 13 LCS collar and this unit is just the right size for her. The e collar functions may be cumbersome if multiple dogs are run but for a single dog it works great. battery life is good, I did run the battery dead after hunting for 3 consecutive days without recharging but as long as you remember to charge it each evening, battery life will not be a problem. Great system for hunting on large tracts of public land in thick cover. I have never lost a signal, even in thick aspen cover and dense cedar stands.

Great product and piece of mind.
One of the best pieces of equipment that I have ever purchased for upland hunting. I run the mini collars on my dogs that range from 45-60 lbs. I prefer them over the larger collars. Call it insurance or piece of mind knowing that I know where my dogs are at all times. No more annoying bells or beepers. A short learning curve with locking the screen something that you will need to learn to keep the transmitter from changing pages while in a pocket. It seems high at first but its a lot cheaper than replacing a good companion in the field.

I was very disappointed in the Sport Dog TEK 1 I initially bought. It was always breaking and after the warranty expired it was irritating to pay for repeated repairs. The old saying you get what you pay for is true. I tried saving money with the Tek but ended up spending more when I replaced it with a Garmin. Other than periodic software updates, the Garmin Alpha has stood up to harsh field conditions in extreme heat and cold, along with wet conditions. In other words, it works. I would have given it 4 stars but the instruction booklet left me searching the internet for more refined instructions and the desktop software is not user friendly unless you are a Geocache geek. Lion Country offers the location service in case you lose the transmitter or receiver. This is a nice peace of mind service.

a bit complicated for us old folks
I have a French Britanny, so the smaller size was important to me. The GPS location/tracking abilities work well and keep me in contact with my caniine hunting partner, but the touch screen is too sensitive for me. I recently purchased a holster for the unit and hope that this will correct that problem. Over all I am happy with the unit, but I just wish it as a bit more user friendly for us old farts.
