LCS Latigo Twist Leads

The LCS Latigo Twist Lead is sturdy with heavy latigo leather
lead and strong brass snaps.  I found this lead very effective in working on basic obdience or just taking my best friend for a walk.  The durable heavy leather allows quick corrections, and I expect mine to last for years.

LCS Tick Release

The weather is getting warm and the ticks are very active. The other day I discovered an imbedded tick on my side. I used some of the Tick Release that I keep on hand at home. The tick easily came off without leaving any of it behind. I like to keep a bottle of Tick Release in my training bag and at home.

Fiocchi Ammunition

May 4th, 2009 Posted in Training Equipment | No Comments »

I use three of the four types of Fiocchi Ammunition that we offer here at Lion Country. I have found that the quality, performance and price of this line of ammo cannot be matched.  Before I came to work at Lion Country Supply, I had used virtually all of the major brands of shotgun ammo for my various hunting needs. None will compare with Fiocchi ammunition for value and performance.
My favorite shotgun is a 16 gauge and ammo of this gauge is often not available in many of the other major brands. It is available to me in 3 of the 4 Fiocchi Lines of ammo.
I use the “Game and Target” (GT) load for rabbit hunting.  It has more than enough zap to take rabbits here in our Pennsylvania cover, without mangling the game at closer ranges.
When I go stomping around in the Grouse woods, I grab a box of the “High Velocity” (HV) loads.  These have the knockdown power to help even a lousy shot like me to score on a few of our Pennsylvania “Thunder-Chickens” once in a while.
My Brother-in-Law, Tom, is one of those fanatical crow hunters, and he talks me into going out with him every chance he can.  Those birds are extremely wary and fun to hunt with the right call and set-up.  The problem is that you need a load that can really reach out and “smoke-em”!  My solution to this need is Fiocchi’s “Golden Pheasant” (GP) load. It has the long reach and dense pattern that I need to keep the crow-count up to a respectable level for a day’s hunt.
Try our Fiocchi Ammo for your next day in the field. You won’t be disappointed!

LCS LeatherFeel Collars

It was time for a new collar and we went with the new LCS LeatherFeel Collar in D-ring configuration in orange. It was great during the winter months by staying flexible and didn’t absorb moisture and dog smells.  The LeatherFeel collars seem to be very sturdy and I believe it will be a good collar for years to come.

LCS Spotlit Dog Light

Yahoo!  An easy way to see my black Lab Rita at night.  I’ve been using the Dog Locator Light (DLL) in white since December - it’s great.  On dark cold nights I never lost sight off my dog while she was outside. The light is sturdy and convenient and is clipped (the clip is heavy-duty) easily to her collar and is never in her way or a distraction. I’ve also got one on my key ring. Love it.

SportDog SportHunter 1825

April 4th, 2009 Posted in Electronic Collars, Training Equipment | No Comments »

I just tested the new Sportdog  SportHunter1825 training collar while hunting with my Lab and am very impressed with the new system.

Sportdog has introduced a cradle charging system for the receiver while the transmitter is more traditional plug system. Another improvement is the 2-hour quick charge batteries that do not have memory so they can be placed on the charger at any time with no fear of over charging causing the batteries to degrade.

The transmitter is compact for its incredible 2+ mile range and can be worn around your neck while hunting. The dog selection toggle switch is color coded for the black and orange collar straps, and the system will expand to a total of three collars.  The receiver is much smaller and compact, and weighs significantly less than previous models. The only negative is the on/off button can be hard to operate.

The 1825 can operate in 7 different modes. The mode I chose was: Upper button continues stimulation, Lower button tone only and the side button vibration.  My dog has been trained with a collar with continuous stimulation only and it didn’t take her long to respond to the tone as a “stay close” command. I also liked the vibration mode, she is a responsive dog that aims to please and the vibration seemed to work well, in place of electric stimulation

I look forward to using this collar on my new pup and feel I can make progress with just vibration while doing yard work.  In a range field test we were able to receive a signal, line of sight with no tree obstructions at 2.5 miles. This should be plenty for any big running pointing dog in heavy grouse and woodcock cover. I will have no problem recommending the Sportdog SportHunter 1825 to customers who have pointers, flushers or hounds.

Glycocharge Endurance Supplement

March 30th, 2009 Posted in Medicine Shelf, Training Equipment | No Comments »

Reviewed by: John Sarver, LCS Warehouse Specialist

My 9-year-old Lab is getting a little long in the tooth and has the accompanying aches and pain that comes with age.  We often have the chance to work a continental style pheasant shoot at a local club, where you can expect 30 to 100 retrieves per day.  After a recent shoot, Alle could barely move for a day.  We had another shoot the following weekend, so I mixed some Glycocharge and give it to her during and after the shoot.

The results were amazing – she felt so good when we got home she ran off to visit the neighbors.  I should have tried Glycocharge sooner!

I find the Uplander G3 a good training tool for training
retrievers, especially when equipted with the TriTronics Pro Control Remote Release System.  It provides the versitility of releasing live ducks or pheasant’s, as well as bumpers, Dokken Dead Fowl trainers and  live or dead birds. It also fires a 209 primer for the shot report, which I find to be an excellent attention getter when training.  I highly recommend this launcher from personal experience.

The LCS Bird Dog Trainer II is one of the new additions to the LCS product line for 2009 - and is completely reengineered.  In my option, it’s a big improvement from the original LCS Bird Dog Trainer.  The unit is now 2 dog capable and offers a reliable 400 yard range.  Four easy to use stimulation levels, four beeper tones, and also operates the LCS Universal Bird Launchers and Auto Backing Dog.  New highly visible orange transmitter, and I like using the call/locate only feature. I can locate my dog when needed and switch from one to two dogs with a simple slide switch on the side of the transmitter.  It’s a quality training unit at a great price.

Annamaet Endure

February 26th, 2009 Posted in Kennel Supplies, Medicine Shelf | No Comments »

Reviewed by: Brian Parsons, LCS Telephone Specialist

I have been using Annamaet Endure for about a year. It is a powdered daily glucosamine and chondroiten supplement that I use on my older dogs for better joint motion.
Most working Labs end up with some arthritis by age 7. Endure helps slow down the process thru joint lubrication while also providing some anti-flammatory benefit.
I also like the fact that it is a all natural, non synthetic, product that feeds easily on top of their food once a day. At first it smells a little strong but the dogs do eat it up and I do not have to worry about administering pills.
